my son's birthday is coming up this week, and he asked me whether he could have a laptop for doing his school works and entertainments. After a long discussion with my son, I decided to purchase one for him, but i am not familiar with laptops at all.
Here are the requirements that my son wants, hope you all can recommend some laptops' options to me.
14.1 inch monitor; watching youtube without freezing; processor must be 1.73GHz or above; able to do multi-tasks such as opening firefox, youtube, Microsoft Words and msn together without freezing; light weight, weighting less than 6 pounds; and a small built-in video camera.
Here are my requirements
the price is around $400; can last for 2 years but No HP and Apple laptop please.
Thanks for your time and kind attentions. And have a nice day.
I don't know why you don't want an HP laptop, but they are actually very good. Maybe you had a bad experience with one, but don't judge all HP computers because of just one.
I actually found this one that is around your price range and had really good specs:
If you don't like this one, that's fine of course, just make sure that you buy a laptop that has an intel processor because these are better. Also make sure you pick a laptop that has at least 2 or 3 gb of memory (3gb is better, 4gb is great)
I hope that helps :)
Your not going to find a completely new laptop with a microsoft msn discussion14.1" screen for around $400, or at least a good one. If it's fine with your son, the you could get a much better computer with a bit smaller screen for that price that would last a while. This is a very nice netbook. Our school bought 20 of these to replace some clunky huge laptops and desktops. They may struggle a bit on 1080p and 720p youtube videos but other than that they do everything without freezing.
First off, make sure you both know how to take care of a laptop. Never run it where the air intake and output ports will be blocked. No bed, no lap or carpet. Run it only on a hard surface. This prevents heat buildup and less dust too. No drinking any liquids near or over it either.
With that in mind, try the cnet laptop buying guide to help you choose then go find that model in a store like Bestbuy, Fry's etc.
if your looking for something more expensive that would be acer or sony
medium pricing would probably be asus
and cheaper ones would be dell and lenova
but they all differ you should go on their actual websites and check them out
they list all the specs on their site.

i am a college student and i bought the toshiba L635 two months ago, it is a great machine.it is on sale now for 349 from best buy. it owuld be wise to pay 30 bucks to upgrade the memory from 2 gb to 4,i did. it is a 13 inch, but you should ask youmicrosoft msn discussion son to consider a slightly smaller screen. it has two advantages, its is lighter wieght and it uses less energy than a larger screen. in addition, the processor in it uses about half the wattage of the average processor. the less engery used, the longer it will last. the processor is a dual core 2.0 ghz celeron processor. it is powerful enough i can play civ 5(without any skips or problems), has high definition graphics, has a great web cam/microphone, and can run serval things at once. it also has a wipeable keyboard, so if you spill something on it it better then having a normal keyboard. and it has a writeable dvd drive, so if your son wants to make cd's he can. Also, try using openoffice.org, it is great for high shcool students becuase it is free and most high schools all thats needed is a word processor. you can save files in microsoft office format,so people using office can use the file. and as he plays with itm he can figure out how to use the power point and excel parts just like office. but if he doesnt want that laptop,i can suggest anothe rlaptop,it has free shipping and u pay no taxes outside california(399). its a 15 inch dell, with a 2.3 ghz processor and 4 gigs of ram. here is the toshiba link:
